Premier League on BSSS: Match Blog — Chelsea 2, Tottenham 0

WHO: Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea
WHEN: Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019
WHERE: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, North London
TV: NBC Sports Network
WHAT’S UP: A tremendous top of the table six-pointer, as Spurs host Chelsea in a London Derby. Spurs are fifth, Chelsea only a few points better — and if Spurs win, they’ll take the Blues’ place in the top four.

A round of applause before kickoff for Martin Peters, a member of the 1966 England team that won the World Cup. He passed away Saturday morning at 76. He scored the second goal in the 4-2 win in the Final at Wembley.

We are underway at Spurs. Tottenham in the lilywhites headed to the left, Chelsea in the blues headed to the right, and it kicks off. Periodic updates to follow.

’ Chelsea are moving the ball fluidly, Tottenham racing around and pressing.

’ Bad turnover by Chelsea in Spurs’ attacking half, and the Tottenham shows its talent in ball control for a full minute.

’ Nice through ball by Chelsea to Mason Mount, but Jan Vertonghen read it well and kicked it away. Good work by Chelsea’s Willian to move to the ball to ensure the Blues had it in the midfield, too.

’ Corner to Chelsea.

’ And another, conceded by Aurier without any pressure by Chelsea.

’ GOAL CHELSEA, and that’s Willian with an absolute stunner! Short corner gets back to the Brazilian, a couple of light touches before he gets it into space, and he lights Spurs up in the back with a thunderbolt into the onion bag. 1-nil to the West Londoners. That’s his third goal of the season in the league.

’ A third Chelsea corner in the first quarter hour. On Aurier’s side again.

’ Chelsea with good pressure into the attacking third, but the Blues are having difficulty with service into Tammy Abraham. The passes are too difficult for Abraham to handle.

’ Another corner, this time conceded by Dier.

’ Dele Alli is released, but his pass toward the middle is intercepted and Chelsea go the other way… Abraham tries to find Mount, but Spurs kick it away for a throw-in. Mount needs to be faster on the transition.

’ ALMOST for Harry Kane! Sissoko has a quick dribble and centers it to the England striker, but he blazes over. Really solid opportunity to Kane as he took on the Chelsea center backs.

Kane tries to find Son at the far post, but he puts too much on it and puts it into the stands. The off-the-ball run by Son, though… brilliant.

’ Kurt Zuoma from Chelsea has been booked. He roughed up Kane, there.

’ Oh my. Chelsea, on a back pass, release Sissoko into the penalty area, and he collides with Kepa Arrizabalaga. That’s scary.

’ Both back on their feet.

’ Kovacic and Dele Alli exchange some words and a couple of shoves.

’ Two minutes minimum added on at the end of the first half.

+1’ Interesting as Marcos Alonso goes for the ball, Paulo Gazziniga, the spurs goalkeeper gets a high boot in and clatters Alonso. VAR checking…

+4’ GOAL CHELSEA. Willian buries the pen with a stutter step, and the Blues supporters are in delirium! 2-nil to the Blues, and that is huge just before the half.

+5’ HALF

With Chelsea holding more of the ball, the Blues have rendered both Dele Alli and Harry Kane relatively ineffective in this match.

Two goals to the Blues? Not what Jose Mourinho wanted with a chance to get into the top four right in front of him.

Second half underway

’ Christian Eriksen in, Eric Dier off for Spurs. First change in by Mourinho, and Spurs get us started.

’ Kane tries to squeeze through two Chelsea defenders to get the ball away… Aurier has a go from the right, right to Arrizabalaga.

’ GOAL… oh, no. Tammy Abraham is offside on that Chelsea attack. Great ball movement as Mount charges up, lays off for Abraham, switches the point of the attack to Willian… Alonso has a go, but Gazziniga stops it… Abraham charges the rebound and puts it in, but the AR’s flag goes up, rightly.

’ Sissoko is shown yellow for that reckless tackle on Willian. Free kick to Chelsea on the edge of the box, on the flank…

’ Son goes down, and Rudiger for Chelsea clears it at that moment… oh my, Son pops his foot up into Rudiger’s chest! VAR is checking for a red card infraction for violent conduct.

’ STRAIGHT RED. Son gets his marching orders, and Spurs are down to 10 men, down 2-nil. Disaster for Spurs. Son will miss three matches because of this.

’ Rudiger pointing to the fans behind the Chelsea goal and scratching his armpits…

’ Cesar Azpilicueta comes up to Anthony Taylor to talk, and Taylor is jogging to the fourth official. He’s now speaking with Mourinho and Frank Lampard. Fans are throwing things on the pitch.

’ Match resumes.

’ Yellow for Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld. He had a rash challenge on Abraham.

’ Jorginho coming on for Kovacic. First Chelsea sub of the match.

’ Aurier taken down by Alonso, and no foul called. Boos ring out in Harigney. Clear foul for me.

’ Zouma with a clearance… and Arlo White on NBC Sports Network says there are confirmed reports of racist abuse toward Rudiger. There will be a stadium announcement shortly.

’ There it is.

’ Kante with a go… blazes over. Rose on for Vertonghen, and Ndombele on for Lucas Moura. That’s all three subs for Spurs.

’ Corner to Spurs… cross by Kane, and Arrizabalaga comes up with it.

’ Rudiger sees yellow for that challenge on Sanchez.

’ Azpilicueta is going to need a sub, complaining of hammy trouble.

’ Abraham coming off for Batshuayi, Azpilicueta also off for Reece James. So that’s all the subs for today. Ten minutes plus stoppages.

’ Here’s a second announcement for racist abuse.

’ VAR checking for a possible penalty on the edge of the box.

’ No pen…. Corner to Spurs after the free kick, cleared…

’ Here come Chelsea on the break…

’ Eight minutes minimum added on. Is this one not over?

+1’ Corner to Spurs.

+3’ And here’s a third announcement over the PA…

+4’ ALMOST for Batshuayi, and that comes off a great pass from the touchline by Willian.

+7’ Good chance by Kane after neat 1-2 passing by Spurs, but Tomori is on Kane and applies enough pressure to get the striker to shoot right at Arrizabalaga.
