The Revolution announced just after noon Monday they have acquired left-footed defender Christian Mafla via a transfer from Colombian side Atletico Nacional.
Rumors of Mafla’s signing — which would make him the 20th member of the Revs’ roster for 2021 — had sprung up over the weekend. Mafla is a 10-year veteran who has played for six different clubs in Colombia, Uruguay, and Argentina.
“Christian Mafla is a left-sided defender who offers both experience and skill in his position, making him a very good addition to our backline,” sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said in a team statement. “Christian is a strong one-on-one defender, a talented passer, and is comfortable moving into the attack.”
According to the release, Mafla has made 190 appearances in all competitions, with his last five seasons spent in the Colombian top flight.
He is coming off an injured clavicle, which occurred during an incident in training on October 22, according to a Colombian newspaper.
