Revolution midfielder Cristian Penilla underwent successful foot surgery to repair a broken metatarsil in his left foot Wednesday, and as a result is expected to miss the remainder of the 2020 season.
The surgery, performed by Dr. George Theodore at Mass. General West in Waltham, has a recovery time of two to three months. Should the Revolution retain Penilla’s services for the 2021 season — Penilla said in January 2019 that he believed he had signed for two years following the club triggering a purchase clause in his 2018 loan deal; most contracts include an option year — the Ecuadorian should be ready to go by the start of the preseason, or just after the beginning, depending on the preseason’s start date.
Through 80 appearances in three years with the team, Penilla has scored 18 goals and has registered 19 assists. Four of those assists have come in 2020.
Penilla picked up the injury in the Revs’ 2-1 win at New York City FC 10 days ago.
