Final: Revolution 0, NYCFC 0 — New England peckish, settles for a draw

WHO: Revolution vs. New York City FC
WHERE: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
WHEN: 4:30 p.m.
TV/RADIO: NBC Sports Boston/WBZ-FM 98.5/1260 AM (Portuguese)
WHAT’S UP: Seventeen days after a disastrous 2-0 defeat, the same two teams will go up against each other once again — at the same place. It’s a big Eastern Conference six-pointer, too.

We’re underway from Gillette. Your starting lineups and benches are live, and your match notes are below the running feed. Updates are periodic.

4′ Shot by NYC to Turner, a lot of space off that unforced turnover.

10′ Buchanan with an off-balance shot, saved.

13′ Bunbury with a shot, saved by Johnson, rebound to Tajon, he blazes it into the Optum Lounge.

19′ OFFSIDE. Bunbury’s shot is saved, the rebound to Bou, but he’s offside.

22′ Yellow card to Ring for dissent.

25′ Free header by Tajon on the cross by Büttner. Saved by Johnson.

32′ Bye’s cross into Bou cleared.

34′ Tajon with the track back to deflect that try by Mitrita. Corner to NYC…

35′ Late offside flag. Bou is released by Nguyen, flag stays down until he puts the ball past Johnson.

36′ Mackay-Stevens with a shot off Heber’s cross, saved.

42′ Mackay-Stevens again, Turner has to leap to keep it from tucking under the bar.

44′ Another offside for the Revs, and Tajon is flagged as he puts it in.

45′ Free kick by NYC nodded down to Turner, and that’s the half.

HALF

Sweens’ Halftime Thoughts and some numbers:

Revs have been peckish today, interesting to see. Definitely not complaining! A couple of tries for New England, just marred by the offside flag.

6 shots, 4 on-target. Haven’t seen that in a while.

49.7 percent of the ball.

Both teams, 78 percent passing.

Second Half Underway.

47′ Scally is booked for a bad foul on Büttner.

48′ Off the free kick, Tajon with the header, right at Johnson’s hands.

51′ Unbelievable. Buchanan is taken down in the box on a give-and-go with Bou, shouldered down really… after he makes wonderful things happen. No penalty called.

52′ Buchanan with a stop at the other end.

54′ Parks goes into the book for persistent infringement.

55′ Andrew Farrell is down. Not good. He had cleared a ball and he was calling for assistance, but he’s walking it off.

57′ Bye’s cross toward Bou, Bou a step late. Should be a goal.

61′ McNamara gets a telling off for fouling Parks in the midfield. No card yet.

64′ Thorarinsson is shown a yellow for that tackle on Tajon.

65′ Castellanos in for Heber. Tinnerholm in for Scally. Rowe to replace McNamana, Manneh in for Bunbury. Two subs for both sides.

67′ Tajon is fouled while being double-teamed. Callens is booked.

69′ Corner to the Revs.

70′ Neat counter by NYC, and Mitrita nearly scores, but Andrew Farrell with the sliding stop to concede the corner.

72′ Corner for the Revs…. and it’ll be a throw after that.

74′ Tajouri-Schradi in, Acevedo out. I believe this is Tajouri-Schradi’s first appearance at Gillette since the 2018 home opener, when he carved the Revs up for two goals.

77′ Corner to NYCFC.

78′ Tinnerholm was offside by a mile.

79′ Tajon’s afternoon is done, Penilla in. Really excellent performance by Buchanan.

80′ Castellanos is booked for a foul on Caldwell.

81′ ALMOST for Bou, as Rowe’s free kick nearly catches Bou’s noggin. Free run, too.

82′ Bye goes down in the box, no call. Rowe gets the ball back…

83′ Shot Penilla, save Johnson, corner.

84′ Büttner puts it into the Fort.

85′ Ibeagha in for Mackay-Stevens.

89′ Nguyen coming off, Buksa on.

90′ That should be a foul, Penilla down. Unbelievable…. corner to the Revs. Three minutes minimum.

90+1′ Bou’s shot saved, Manneh’s shot on the rebound goes out for a throw-in.

90+2′ Foul on Bye, free kick from 20, 21 yards away.

90+3′ Shot, saved by Turner.

Full Time

For the Revs:

Turner; Büttner, Kessler, Farrell, Bye; McNamara, S. Caldwell; Nguyen, Bunbury, Buchanan; Bou
Bench: Knighton, Buksa, Delamea, Fagundez, Jones, Mancienne, Manneh, Penilla, Rowe

For the Pigeons:

Johnson; Scally, Chanot, Callens, Thorarinsson; Acevedo, Parks; Ring, Mitrita, Mackay-Stevens; Heber
Bench: Stuver, Barrazza, Ibeagha, Tinnerholm, Torres, Rocha, Castellanos, Tajouri-Schradi

The Revs will be without Matt Polster this afternoon, while NYCFC will be without James Sands. Both are suspended: Polster for his red card last weekend, while Sands is out via yellow card accumulation. This is the first match Sands has missed since the September 2019 trip to Gillette that the Revs won, 2-nil.

No one on either side is in danger of an imminent yellow card suspension at the moment. Anton Tinnerholm and Maxime Chanot from NYCFC are two yellows away.

NYCFC will be without Maxi Moralez, Gedion Zelalem, and Tayvon Gray, as all three are not medically cleared to play.

No new injuries for the Revs.

Jeff Lemieux had a pretty good stat Friday morning: seven players have made an appearance in every Revs game this season: Teal Bunbury, Adam Buksa, Gustavo Bou, Brandon Bye, Henry Kessler, Cristian Penilla, and Tajon Buchanan.

Every Revs goal so far in 2020 has been scored by a player whose surname begins with the letter B. Bunbury has four goals, Bou has three, Buksa two, Buchanan one.

Expect tactical adjustments against NYCFC this afternoon.

The Revs are 4-2-1 against the Pigeons at Gillette.

An appearance by Diego Fagundez today will move him to 253 career appearances and one appearance away from tying Matt Reis for second all-time in the Revolution’s record book.
