New England Revolution Revs II

Final: South Georgia Tormenta 4, Revolution II 0 — Unbeaten streak snapped in Georgia

THE TEAMS: Revolution II at South Georgia Tormenta FC
THE SITE: Erk Russell Park, Statesboro, Georgia
THE TIME: 7 p.m.
THE SKINNY: It’s the penultimate game of the 2020 League One campaign for the Baby Revs, who are looking to extend a five-match unbeaten streak and continue to climb up the table.

We’re underway. Your starting lineups, benches, and match notes are below the live feed. Updates are periodic.

2′ Mueller blazes over, but his shot is deflected at the top of the box. Corner that Meyer corrals.

5′ Revs having difficulty in establishing themselves against South Georgia’s press.

10′ Mendonça’s shot is deflected and it’ll be a corner.

18′ GOAL SOUTH GEORGIA, and it’s Nil Vinyals. He takes a cross and a well-measured look with the defending not closing down effectively enough. 1-nil to Tormenta.

21′ Almost a second for Tormenta as they cross through the 6, but no one can connect. Really should be 2-nil.

23′ Another near goal for Tormenta as Arslan’s header goes over the bar.

26′ Corner to Tormenta.

27′ Free kick to Revs II, a good distance from goal.

29′ GOAL SOUTH GEORGIA, and it’s Josh Phelps on the rebound. Meyer had made the initial stop, but couldn’t corral the rebound. Phelps got by the defending and punched it in. 2-0 to Tormenta, and it’s the Hydration Break.

32′ Back underway.

33′ Corner to Tormenta. Piling on the chances.

34′ GOAL SOUTH GEORGIA, and it’s Arslan with a drive just outside the box. 3-nil.

36′ Jon Bell is cautioned. Free kick just outside the penalty area.

39′ Maciel with a shot, wide.

45′ Two minutes minimum added on.

45+1′ Free kick some 40 yards from goal to the Revs after Firmino is brought down

45+2′ Mendonça’s shot is just to the left of the keeper. Saved.

Sweens’ Halftime Thoughts and some numbers:

Yikes. Revs II barely threatened despite the possession numbers, no creativity. Defending has been sloppy, so has the goalkeeping.

62.5 percent of the ball

4 shots, 1 on-target.

86.5 percent passing accuracy

Second Half Underway

49′ Good try by Presley as he slipped into the final third, but Mueller with the denial… sub for Tormenta, DeLoach on for Vinyals.

50′ Meyer with a save on Phelps, unmarked… other way, free kick to the Revs.

56′ Meyer with a save on a cross.

57′ Angking on, he replaces Firmino. First sub of the night for New England.

59′ A nice loft toward Angking, but it’s a touch off. Probably the best fluid attack of the night for New England so far.

61′ Free kick to Tormenta…. close for Skelton. Just wide.

63′ Angking’s shot is blocked off Mendonça’s takeaway.

63′ Two subs for Tormenta. Coutinho and Jambaga, Phelps and Arslan off.

65′ Meyer with the pounce as Tormenta tears through the back.

66′ Mendonça fires it over the bar.

67′ Rennicks dragged down. Triple sub for the Revs as Fujiwara, Shimazaki, and Silva enter. Presley, Rivera, and Spaulding coming off.

69′ Silva tracks all the way back and clears the ball, conceding a corner. Quinones couldn’t handle the cross, and that was almost a chance for a fourth.

70′ Corner to Tormenta…. and another.

74′ Verfurth with a solid slide to deny DeLoach in the box, the referee waves off any penalty shout.

76′ Hydration Break in the rain.

78′ Back underway.

80′ DeLoach has his name taken down into the referee’s book for that foul on Mendonça.

81′ GOAL SOUTH GEORGIA, and that was a killer by Devyn Jambaga. Quinones came over and fronted him, but didn’t close down. Jambaga puts it over Meyer’s head. No chance of stopping that. 4-nil.

83′ Corner to the Revs.

84′ Quinones with the clearance.

86′ Louie comes on for Rennicks.

88′ Fujiwara gets a talking to after a foul.

90′ Two minutes minimum added on.

90+2′ Jara comes off his line and corrals…. Revs II gets the ball back, Angking’s cross is batted by Jara, and Fujiwara blasts it off-target… and that’s the last kick.

For Revs II:

Meyer; Spaulding, Bell, Verfurth, Quinones; Maciel, Firmino, Mendonça; Rivera, Presley, Rennicks
Bench: Tibbetts, Shimazaki, Souza, Silva, H. Fujiwara, Louie, Angking

For Tormenta:

Jara; Thorn, Shelton, Echenrode, Mueller; Gomez, Obinwa, Vinyals; Arslan, Mayr, Phelps
Bench: Lewis, Williams, Jambaga, Jackson, Coutinho, Rowe, Akinsolotu

No new injuries noted for Revs II tonight.

With the Revs out of playoff contention, this one and Saturday’s trip to Forward Madison are for improvement in the table. Los Revitos can move up to sixth with a win — but Tormenta can supplant New England in seventh should it win. Chattanooga is idle. Forward Madison, currently 8th cannot supplant the Revs should New England win tonight.

The big number today is 26: that’s the number of minutes Colby Quinones needs to eclipse the 1,000-minute mark tonight. Not bad for a 17-year-old.

Justin Rennicks is 16 minutes from 500 played at League One.

Conor Presley is 26 minutes from 900 played.

Mike O’Sullivan is listed as OUT for Tormenta. Luca Mayr and Trsitan Deloach are QUESTIONABLE.

Mayr and Marco Micaletto has scored three goals apiece to lead Tormenta.

Tormenta is second from bottom in scoring with 14 goals. New England has scored 18.
